Jambrić — the place that gives it all

Jambrić — the place that gives it all

While the town bakes at 35 degrees, down at Jambrić the forest shade cools the stone and you with it. My favorite place.

There is a spot on the Korana I keep coming back to. Not because it's the most famous, or the biggest, but because it gives everything — and asks for nothing in return.

Up in town, summer presses down at thirty-five degrees and the air just sits there, heavy and still. Down here it's a different world. The sun drops behind the forest, shade falls across the stone, and the whole place cools. You know that feeling when you step out of the heat into shadow and your body finally lets go? All of Jambrić is like that. People up in town reach for air conditioning, while down here nature has already arranged everything.

The water that greets you

The first thing you feel is the water. Right at the entrance to the river there's a spring rising up from below, so your first step in is always fresh, almost cold — the kind of cold that makes you gasp, and then feels perfect. A little further along there's a second spring, one you can actually drink from. Drinking water in the same place where you swim, from the same ground. There's something in that.

You can simply wade in, float, and let the river carry you. You can sit on a big rock and lie in the sun. And if you're braver and surer of foot, you can climb and jump from the rocks — at your own risk, of course, the way it goes at places that belong to no one and to everyone.

Walking on water

The far side of Jambrić is what makes it special. It's covered in stones you can sit or lie on, and the way you enter the water from there is such that you almost walk on it — shallow, clear, and you really can step through the river. You go upstream, toward small water oasis, and then you make a full circle around a little island sitting in the middle of the river.

That circle is its own thing. Water plants, flowers, blue dragonflies looping around you, sunlight scattering across the surface. You're walking on the river with your phone taking photos. It's magic.

A free water massage

And then comes the part I love most about Jambrić. Here the river gives you a massage, for free. There are two places you can sit. One is just right for your lower back — you sit down and the water works along your spine. The other I call the "free anti-cellulite massage," because when you lie down in the water you can literally watch the current work on you, moving the skin up and down, left and right. You sit there in the river laughing at yourself, because nature is doing for free what people pay for.

A place that remembers

There's a spot for a barbecue here too, there's shade, there's stone, there's water. There's everything. When you get bored — and you rarely do — you can head uphill through the forest or along the water toward the next places on the Korana. But the truth is you usually don't. You stay.

Jambrić is where I grew up, where generations learned to swim, where summer is lived the way summer is meant to be lived — slowly, in the water, in the shade, in no hurry at all. All you have to do is find it and make your way down.

And when you do, you'll understand why I always come back.
